Goes of Uruguay returns to the SCA Tournament to be played in Asuncion from June 15 to 19 at the Paraguayan Olympic Committee’s facilities.
With an outstanding path in the Uruguayan league competitions, the Goes team was one of the protagonists from 2010 to 2018 disputing all the finals of the Apertura, Clausura and Federal Championships.
Senior Female
The achievements of the senior women’s team have been 27 consecutive tournaments, being the only team that has always reached the finals in Uruguayan competitions.
Achieved 3 Federal Championships 2013, 2014 and 2016. They are also undefeated in the Apertura and Clausura championships and have been crowned in multiple formative championships.
During the local competition in 2025 they were crowned Champion of the Apertura and runner-up in the Clausura. In the Super 4 they finished in third place with
At the international level, they participated in Pan American tournaments obtaining third place in 2016, and second place in 2017.
In addition, they took part in the South Central Tournament in 2023 and finished in sixth place, while in 2024 they placed seventh.
Experienced trainer
Miguel Berguer is the coach of the Goes senior team that participates in the women’s South Central.
“The expectation is to get as high as possible. The preparation is very intense and we are very excited. We know it will be difficult, we are in Group B with Pinheiros and Scuola Italiana”.
“Goes for me is an institution that opened the doors for me, which was only for basketball and now is a recognized Club in the local Handball. In 2025 we had 5 players in the senior national team that went to the World Cup”.
“Club Goes is like my home, I have a very strong feeling, here I can develop the passion I have for Handball.”
Return to Goes
Martina Barreiro is the captain of the Goes team. Last year she returned from Italy after being crowned Champion with Salerno del Escudeto 2024, 2025.
Regarding the preparation of Goes for the SCA, Martina expressed that they are with the local championship growing in many aspects and with the illusion of making a great debut in the South Central.
“The fixture set us a very demanding first game, which we are analyzing and preparing to face it in the best way.”
“We know it’s only the beginning, but it will be key to impose our game from the start and show all the work and effort we do during the year to reach these instances.”
He also added that the championship generates great expectations for them, since they will face teams with other handball and experiences from other tournaments.
“Last edition the team suffered the disappointment of not being able to participate, and for that reason also, this achievement of being present is doubled. Enjoying this SCA is a clear objective of the group”.
“The fixture places us in group B with Pinheiros and Scuola. We debut against Pinheiros, a historical team of the tournament, and then against Scuola, a direct rival of the local environment that we know a lot.”
“In the local championship we won, but they are always even and challenging matches with Scuola.”
Becoming a captain
As captain, she said it is something new for her this year. “Before, there was Viviana Ferrari, a great friend and reference.”
“I don’t think being a captain is about carrying more responsibility, but rather weaving the path together and that each one finds her voice. I like everyone to feel that they are part of the team, adding from their own role.
“Perhaps I have to be one of the most experienced and responsible for unifying criteria at certain times, but always listening, learning and moving forward as a team”.
“For me, Goes has always been my home. I had the opportunity to play abroad, and coming back to the club, it was coming back to a safe place.”
“Last year I came back and I have been sharing with the group for a year now, getting back together with my teammates, playing again with my sister and experiencing an important renewal of the group”.closed Barreiro.
As of June 2025 Martina will once again wear the Goes colors and will be present at the SCA Club Tournament in Asunción.
