Balonmano Layva: present and projection in women’s handball. It is one of the most important clubs in Uruguay and in recent years has gained international notoriety.

The current champion of the 2025 edition of the Handball Libertadores is preparing to defend the title in the SCA Clubs competition to be played from June 15 to 19 in Asunción, Paraguay.

Club origin and profile

The original name of the institution is B.B.C. Layva is a club in Montevideo, Uruguay, located in the Villa Dolores neighborhood.

It has more than 70 years of history and its main sport is basketball, although for the last 18 years Layva Handball has been part of the club’s proposals.

It is traditionally considered a training institution, with a large number of players in women’s handball from junior to senior categories.

The work that is being done, taking into account that it does not have an appropriate infrastructure, but rather a modest one that is adapted and that is carried out with a strong work in the formative categories, stands out.

Historic continental achievement

The club reached its biggest milestone in the 2025 by winning the title of Champion of the SCA Women’s Club Handball Tournament La Libertadores del Handball Libertadores of Handball.

It was the first time that a Uruguayan club won the continental handball tournament. In the final they defeated 20-19 SEDALO of Argentina in Santiago de Chile.

How was the road to the title:

  • Victory vs. Leonas (25-16)
  • Victory vs. River Plate (22-15)
  • Quarters vs. Ovalle (29-18)
  • Semifinal again vs River Plate (21-19)
  • Final vs SEDALO (20-19)

The team’s outstanding players are its goalkeeper, Agustina Modernell, who in the final was chosen as the MVP of the match.

Paula Eastman, a central player, is another valuable athlete who is part of the team; and its captain, the experienced Rosina Gonzalez , is undoubtedly one of the stars for her constant commitment.

Thinking about what lies ahead

Their coach, Leonardo Puñales , commented that they have been working on fine-tuning since the preseason in February.

In addition, they take advantage of the official league games as part of their preparation and add hours of physical work that they keep out of competition.

Importance for Uruguayan handball

“To have won the championship last year meant a lot to us, we were able to show a work that we have been doing for several years with a highly professional commitment.”

Puñales said that the title was a reward for so much effort, for years of work by this group of players at the Club.

“We gained diffusion and the press echoed our achievement, we obtained official recognition. All this represented a lot for each one of us, since we had the diffusion that handball usually does not have in our country”.

Leonardo Puñales has been working with Uruguayan women’s handball for 28 years, he is the coach in Layva of the senior category and also directs the youth.

In addition, he is part of the coaching staff of the national team, coordinates and is the coach in seniors and juniors.

“Dedication, organization and planning are what is needed to carry out these projects,” said Puñales.said Puñales.

Acknowledgments

The continental title was considered a before and after for Uruguayan women’s handball. Both players and coaching staff received official distinctions from the Departmental Board of Montevideo.

They also received the Charrúa Award from the Uruguayan Journalists Circle and an outstanding recognition from the Uruguayan Handball Federation.

The media coverage was a plus, they were able to show their title of continental champions to the whole country.
