Argentina and Chile are dreaming of qualifying for the 2023 World Cup. La Garra and Las Lobas defeated Paraguay and Uruguay respectively in the SCA Women’s Senior Tournament being held in Buenos Aires.
In the first match of the day, the Chilean national team came back from a 5-0 deficit in the first half against their Uruguayan counterparts.
The Chilean side built their victory right up to the final seconds of the match with a thrilling finish to seal a 24-23 win.
Following the historic victory, coach Felipe Barrientos was visibly moved and said:
“Very happy for the players since it is a step forward for Chilean handball because it had never happened before against Uruguay and in the first instance against Paraguay.”
Argentina also celebrated
In the final match of the third round, the Albiceleste side made the difference in the second half and secured their second victory of the competition, this time against Paraguay by 25–17.
The team coached by Eduardo Gallardo were solid in defence, with strong performances from Antonela Mena and goalkeeper Ayelen Rosalez, who made over 50% of the saves, whilst Micaela Casasola was the standout player in attack.
The downside for the Argentines was the injury to Luciana Mendoza, who had to leave the match due to instability in her left knee and will undergo specific tests for a more accurate diagnosis.
Both victories set the stage for tonight’s clash between Argentina and Chile, kicking off at 8 pm at Parque Roca (Oceanía Hall). The winner secures a place at next year’s Handball World Cup, to be held in Denmark, Norway and Sweden.
