The International Handball Federation (IHF) awarded the Royal Spanish Handball Federation the right to host the 4th Wheelchair Handball World Championship, which will take place from September 14 to 21, 2026.
This is the first time the World Championship in this sport has been held in Europe. Spain has already hosted major competitions.
Draw took place this Wednesday, July 22, at the IHF headquarters in Basel, confirming the four groups for the preliminary round of this historic edition of the competition, which will feature a record 12 teams.
Defined groups
Competition will consist of a preliminary round with four groups of three teams, followed by the quarterfinals, semifinals, and final.
The top two teams in each group advance to the quarterfinals, ensuring that each team plays at least five games during the tournament.
South America will be represented by Brazil and Chile. Brazilian is in Group C along with Portugal and India.
It is one of the most evenly matched groups. Brazil was the champion of the 2022 Four-Player Wheelchair Handball World Championship.
Meanwhile, Chile is in Group D along with Egypt and Lithuania. Chileans have extensive experience in World Cup tournaments. The Egyptians were champions in 2022 and are the defending champions.
World Cup History in Spain
Most notable events are: the 2013 Men’s Senior World Championship, the 2019 Men’s Junior World Championship, the 2021 Women’s Senior World Championship, as well as various qualifying rounds for the Olympic Games in 2021 and 2024.
