The Emecal Gymnasium witnessed a disputed match between Colegio Ward and Liceo Nacional de Maipú for group 3 of the South Central Clubs in Taubaté 2024. What at first seemed to be a clear victory for the Chileans, the Argentinean squad won 28-21.
An even first half saw the Chilean representatives dominate the pace of the game, being more effective in attack and taking a slight lead on the scoreboard. At the end of the first half, the great performance of the Chilean goalkeeper Damián Chinchón, who had a total of 10 saves in the first half, prevented the Argentine team from getting closer to the scoreboard, and they went to the break 14-11 in favor of Liceo Nacional de Maipú.
In the second half, Ward College needed to improve their effectiveness on offense as they missed 18 shots in the first half. Rodolfo Jung’s team managed to tie the game in the first five minutes. And not only that, after the tie they began to dominate the game, and with a series of ball steals they gradually unbalanced the Chilean defense, reaching a difference of 6 goals in their favor. The game ended 21-28 in favor of Ward College. The MVP of the game was Juan Bautista of Ward College.
Post-match statements:
Juan Bautista, Ward College playerWe are happy with the result and we are getting rid of the nerves of the first games, tomorrow we have the most complicated match. Today we started off weak, we made a lot of mistakes, but in the second half we came out with more confidence and managed to put the ball in the net, which was what we lacked in the first half”.
Damián Chinchón, player of Liceo Nacional Maipú: “It is our first opportunity in this type of competition, so we come to gain experience and be able to transmit it in Chile. Unfortunately we did not get the result, but we will give everything in the matches”.
