Refereeing in Beach Handball

Beach Handball refereeing is in a constant process of renewal and competition is essential for the development of referees and delegates.

Luiz Filipe Caldas, Head of Beach Handball Referees of COSCABAL, highlighted the importance of having 5 places for the next Senior World Championship of the discipline to be held in Croatia in 2026.

The SCA Senior qualifier to be held in 2025 will have 3 tickets in the women’s category and 2 in the men’s category.

“In order to get more places, it is essential that our national teams perform well in future competitions, winning titles and increasing the number of countries participating in continental tournaments fosters the growth of our sport.” Caldas said.

As for refereeing, the region continues to work to develop more and better referees. “Currently, we have 6 international couples: one from Argentina, 2 from Brazil, one from Colombia, one from Paraguay and one from Venezuela.”
“We are in a process of constant renewal and increase of referees and continental delegates, especially in the countries participating in our tournaments.”

It should be noted that in the last U17 tournament in Iquique, 4 refereeing teams and 2 continental delegates were formed.
“It is important to remember that refereeing courses generally take place in the junior tournaments, while in the senior tournaments we try to have referees with more experience.”
Caldas assured that it is a time-consuming process, the more continental competitions, the more training to train referees and delegates.
The World Games are coming
From August 7 to 17, the 12th edition of the World Beach Games will be held in Chengdu, China. The Brazilian refereeing duo of Lucas Brasil and Wictor Santos will be officiating for the first time in the international competition.

Meanwhile, the head referee of COSCABAL, Luiz Filipe Caldas will also be present, it will be his seventh participation in The World Games. Caldas was in Akita 2001, Duisburg 2005, Kayhsiung 2009, Cali 2013, Wroctaw 2017 and Birmingham 2022.
