Are you familiar with the EHF European Championships?

“Yes, we know them from watching the games on TV, and we know that’s where the best athletes in the world are competing.”said Bruna.

Where it all began

They had always been involved in handball without imagining that they would become international referees, until a friend of theirs enrolled them in their first refereeing course.

Renata commented that as handball athletes they had a friend who played with them (Sylvia Mariah) who was also a referee and was the one who invited them to take the refereeing course in 2013.

They remember that they played their first game together in a final in the Regional Phase of the OLESC (School Olympics of Santa Catarina) in the city of Ituporanga.

Arbitration in Brazil

Regarding the evolution of referees in Brazil, they agree that there has been growth and evolution in recent years.

“I certainly think we’ve had a huge gap in recent years, but today we have a large group of referees being worked on, both nationally, continentally and internationally. Among them are men’s and women’s doubles,” says Renata Correa.says Renata Correa.

Together they referee the Brazilian championships at least one tournament per month, “our competition lasts a week. With the exception of isolated matches in the national league,” said Renata.said Renata.

Finally, the recommendation they give to those who are just starting out is to keep working hard and dedicating themselves, because the road to get to the top (IHF) is long and difficult but not impossible.

“Many times to get far is not easy, we have to study, train a lot and do a strong work with the psychologist. Everything you do is worth it and the reward is felt when we receive an invitation like this, to go and whistle in the EHF where the best are.”

“You have to insist and know that you will have to overcome several obstacles, but when you get there it’s all worth it,” says Bruna, says Bruna.

In closing, Renata added: “Being an (IHF) referee is super rewarding and worth it for those who really want to be referees. So be prepared because the opportunity doesn’t come twice.”
