The Women’s Handball Libertadores is over!

The Handball Libertadores is over! We leave you the summary of a vibrant day that closed with a historic final, full of emotion, tactics and an unforgettable champion in the National Stadium Park.

Definitions 9th to 12th place

Leonas vs Cerro Porteño (18-19)

In a very even match from the beginning, Leonas managed to prevail in the first 20 minutes thanks to their offensive intensity.

However, some inaccuracies at the start allowed Cerro Porteño to turn the score around and go into halftime with a minimal lead.

The second half remained balanced, with both teams exchanging goals. With the clock ticking down to the final 30 seconds, the Paraguayan team struck again and sealed the narrow 19-18 win, securing 11th place in the tournament.

Valeria Quiñonez of Cerro Porteño and Javiera Laferte of Leonas were the top scorers with 5 goals each, while María Constanza Berni of Cerro Porteño was elected MVP of the match.

Torrense vs Scuola (17-31)

Scuola Italiana showed its best version in the last day and dominated Torrense with a resounding 31-17, obtaining the 9th place in the tournament.

From the start, the Uruguayan team was superior in offensive effectiveness and counterattacking speed, while Torrense was unable to correct its turnovers.

Luan Agliardi’s defense was unable to contain Scuola, who easily found space.

Candelaria Duarte shined with 8 goals and was named the most valuable player of the match.

Definitions 5 to 8

Dorrego vs Jockey Club (28-30)

The clash between the Argentine teams had two completely different halves. Dorrego dominated the first half with an outstanding performance by their goalkeeper Florencia Pecarerre, who was key for the 18-12 partial score.

In the second half, the Argentine team adjusted their offense from the extremes and took advantage of unforced errors by their opponents to turn the score around.

With ball steals and quick transitions, Jockey Club managed to overcome the rival defense and win 30-28, taking 7th place in the South Central American Club Championship.

María Eugenia Mellano was the top scorer with 8 goals and Sofía Palermo won the MVP award.

Ovalle vs FMO/Portuguese (18-26)

The Brazilian team was solid in all its lines and took 5th place in the SCA Clubs by 26-18 against Ovalle. In the first half, the effectiveness in attack and the defensive order allowed them to go to the break 12-8 up.

Ovalle tried to stay in the game, but the inaccuracies in the definition from 6 meters and the low effectiveness in outside shots conditioned their offensive performance.

This was compounded by losses in ball circulation and difficulties in breaking Portugués’ well-placed defense.

Gabriela Müller of Ovalle was the scorer of the match with 6 goals, while Eduarda Borges stood out for her offensive reading and was elected MVP of the match.

Definition 3rd place

River Plate vs Pinheiros (25-27)

In a vibrant match, the Brazilian team won third place against River Plate 27-25.

The Argentine team imposed the rhythm in the first half, with fast transitions and a defense that made Pinheiros uncomfortable, closing the first half 15-11 in their favor.

However, in the second half, the Brazilian team adjusted its defensive system, switching to a more aggressive defense that forced losses in the front line of the reigning runners-up and allowed them to score through counterattacks.

At the 21st minute of the second half, Pinheiros took the lead for the first time in the match, taking advantage of River’s physical weakness and improving their offensive efficiency from the wings.

Goalkeeper Jessica Oliveira was key in the closing, with decisive interventions in long-range shots and was elected the MVP of the match.

Grand Final

Layva vs Sedalo (20-19)

Layva became the undefeated champion of the Handball Libertadores after defeating Sedalo 20-19 in a historic final.

The Uruguayan team imposed a very compact defense, with Agustina Modernell as the star under the three posts. Fast transitions and a good defensive retreat were key to control the pace of the match.

Sedalo managed to react in the second half by adjusting its attack from the wings and forcing errors in the opponent’s start.

In the final seconds, Modernell blocked a decisive shot and Maite Pessina scored the winning goal on counterattack, winning 20-19. The Uruguayan goalkeeper was voted MVP of an intense and exciting final.
