Chile said goodbye to the World Cup

Chile said goodbye to the World Cup, the team coached by Aitor Etxaburu lost to Portugal 46-28 in the third date of Group III of the Main Round.

The Chilean national team’s participation in the World Cup in Croatia, Denmark and Norway 2025 came to an end.

First half

In the last match of the Main Roun, Chile kept the lead during the first stage of the game. Portugal was able to sustain the dominance and went to the break 22-17 in favor of the Portuguese.

Second half

At the beginning of the second half, Chile managed to pull within 21-24, but coach Paulo Fidalgo quickly adjusted the Portuguese defense and things changed. Chile went from being down by four (28-24) to not being able to score for most of the second half. Defensive mistakes and turnovers allowed Portugal to extend the lead and close the game 46-28.

Portuguese player Francisco Costa was the top scorer with 9 goals and the MVP of the match. Erwin Feutchmann scored 8 goals followed by Estaban Salinas who scored 6.

In terms of effectiveness from 7 meters, Chile had 100%, on the other hand, Portugal dominated from 9 meters with 71% effectiveness.

It should be noted that the Chilean national team achieved a historic milestone by defeating Japan 31-26 in the first round and thus qualifying for the second round.
