Brazil made a historic World Championship

Brazil had a historic World Championship, losing to Denmark 33-21 in the quarterfinals. The team coached by Marcus Tata Oliveira was unable to defeat the Danish power and finished in seventh place in the tournament.

This edition of the World Cup will be forever engraved in the memory of the Brazilians, after a positive first phase that gave them the qualification to the Main Round with one game to go. Then it was the turn of the second stage where they also had a brilliant performance and managed to reach the quarterfinals.

First half

During the beginning of the game Brazil was without Thiago Petrus who, after a defense on Mathias Gidsel, received two minutes of exclusion. The Brazilian team found it difficult to get into the rhythm proposed by Denmark. The first goal of the match came after 3 minutes through the conversion of Rasmus Schmidt, in Brazil Rudolph Hackbarth was in charge of scoring the penalty. Marcus Tata requested Time Out to try to rearm the Brazilian defense, while Denmark already had 60% of possession and a partial 6-2. Defensive errors by the Brazilian team allowed Denmark to extend its lead. At the end of the first period Brazil managed to reduce the deficit and go to the break 12-15 in favor of the Danes who had 74% of effectiveness.

Second half

In the second half, Brazil again received a two-minute exclusion for Guilherme Borges. Denmark took advantage of defensive errors and turnovers to counterattack and convert. Halfway through the match, the Danes stretched the advantage to 12 goals up. A fast and flawless game gave the victory to one of the best teams in the world, Denmark took the victory 33-21.

Emil Nielsen, Danish goalkeeper, had an outstanding performance with more than 20 defenders and was elected the MVP of the match.

Rasmus Schmidt, Mathias Gidsel and Emil Jakobsen scored 6 goals each, while Brazil’s top scorer was Vinicios Carvalho with 7 goals.

The road to Brazil

In the first phase, Brazil was part of Group E and played its matches at the Unity Arena in Oslo. They had two wins and one loss. They beat Norway 29-26 and the United States 31-24, and lost to Portugal 26-30. In the Main Round for Group III they won all three matches, first against Chile 28-24, then against Sweden 27-24 and closed with a victory against Spain 26-25, qualifying for the first time to the quarterfinals of a world championship.
