With a great victory over Chile, Uruguay got a ticket to the World Cup and took third place in the SCA Senior Women’s Handball Championship held at the CT Niteroi stadium.
TIGHT FIRST STAGE
Chile and Uruguay played a hard-fought first half. Both teams sought to be strong in defense and to generate long positional attacks from their opponents.
Both teams had passages in which they were up on the scoreboard, without getting much difference. Both the Uruguayans and the Chileans found it hard to score, which was reflected in the scoring and in the 7 missed shots of each team.
They went to the break 9-8, with a minimal advantage for Uruguay.
VICTORY AND QUALIFICATION
In the second half, Uruguay came out determined to take the match. Chile, on the other hand, had problems in their positional attack, which caused them to go 10 minutes without being able to score. Although the red team continued to fight to get closer on the scoreboard, the difference marked in the first minutes of the second half made the comeback very difficult. In the end, the Charrúas were able to stretch the score even more and took the victory 27-18. With this victory Uruguay placed third in the championship and qualified for the World Cup in Germany/Netherlands 2025 after 13 years of absence.
Catalina Catro (PY), Martina Barreiro (UY) and Catalina Torunier (UY) were the scorers of the match with 4 goals each. Uruguayan center back Paula Eastman was named MVP of the match.
STATEMENTS
Paula Eastman, player of the Uruguayan national team:
“We have just qualified for a World Cup after 13 years of hard work and sacrifice. Many times we had to leave these championships with nothing and we had to keep going, get up, dream again and trust in ourselves.”
“Here we are, with a very good generational change. All the comrades who were part of these years of process also meant a lot. This is also for them, for our families, for our friends. We are very happy, very grateful for what we have achieved”.
Catalina Castro, player of the Chilean national team:
“Happy for what the team did during the tournament, it’s up to keep fighting to reach our goals later on. It was not the tournament we expected.
