Staff and preparation
How are you preparing to face the South Central?
- The preparation is going strong, we train every day and we also organize matches with the men’s first division teams.
How many players do you have?
- We started with a squad of 23 players, then we made a first cut and continued working with 19 players. In the next few weeks we will announce the final list of the 14 athletes who will travel to Brazil to compete.
In search of international exposure
“All our players compete in the National League. So far we have not had the opportunity for one of our athletes to be called by a team abroad”, Chávez also considers this competition to be very important, as it is a window of exposure for the Salvadoran players. Chavez assures that in this type of tournaments the players gain experience by facing other national teams.
How long have you been in charge of the selection?
- As a coach I worked with the women’s national teams from 2003 to 2010, then I worked with the men’s national team and in 2023 I returned to the women’s national team.
Objectives
With the South Central qualifying for the next World Cup in Germany/Netherlands 2025, will El Salvador go in search of one of the available places or is the objective to compete and gain experience?
-
- Winning the place would be the ideal, but our reality is to gain exposure, to have the opportunity to improve our level, since playing in our area we are very much on the sidelines. Going to rub shoulders with powers like Brazil or Argentina is very useful for us.
What are your expectations for South Central?
- Firstly, that our athletes gain international exposure and secondly, that they give their best and that we can be a worthy rival to the teams we are going to face.
Carlos Chávez will be accompanied by his technical assistant Itzel Carolina Arriaga and delegate Claudia Cristina Nieta. El Salvador’s previous international competitions were its participation in the Central American Games and the Central American Games of the Caribbean. Finally, Chavez expressed that the objective is to continue preparing for what will be Santo Domingo 2026 with the Central American Caribbean Games.
