Candace Buckner has been a columnist for the Washintong Post since 2016.
She has written sports columns and reviews since late 2021, and claimed that “in Paris I found true love: team handball.”
During his first three years in the position, he has twice earned Top 10 honors in column writing.
“Is handball the best sport ever invented?
That’s a trick question.
Of course it is.
Not even a debate.
And it only took one trip to Paris to make me realize the beauty and brutality of the sport.” He expressed on his X account
“I found true love in Paris. Its name is team handball.Discovering an unknown sport and a whole new world at the Paris Olympics.” […] “It’s like playing basketball 80’s style at a rave. The most action you can imagine in a 60-minute game. The best players can look like graceful ballerinas as they fly in to score goals.” Candace commented.
“Many of us in the United States have been living in handball obscurity. We might think we would own the sport if we played it; that discussion comes up at almost every Olympic Games. But how can we master handball if we barely pay attention to it? Silly us. We could learn something from the rest of the world.During the preliminary rounds of the Olympics, there are men’s and women’s teams ranging from South America to North Africa, East Asia and Scandinavia.
Their fan bases also travel, carrying flags, singing and living in a convention center that has been repurposed into an intimate space,” he said.
“It’s not for wimps.”
Buckner went on to add that “Just minutes after Sunday’s women’s game between Brazil and Hungary, I realized that this sport is not for wimps.” […] “There’s a great player in the middle; offenses try to draw the defense and then kick it to the wing to generate scoring opportunities.Other than that, I still didn’t understand the rules.
But as I understand them: players run from one side of the court to the other and can dribble the palm-sized ball only when they feel like it.
(Actually, it’s after every third step).”

The columnist continued: “They use some kind of sticky Spider-Man stuff so they can catch the ball, roll it in their hand and then throw heaters at the goalie’s head.
(It’s just resin, and they aim at a goal three meters wide and two meters high).
And also, defenders can throw the hand at any attacker trying to score.
(No, not really. Too much contact will warrant a two-minute suspension for a player.)”
“Brazilian and Hungarian fans squeezed into the stands provided a steady wave of song and celebration. When the “Seven Nations Army” echoed through the arena, they started stomping their feet. The guy whose job was supposed to be simply announcing the goals, turned DJ and yelled into the microphone “Clap! Clap! Clap! Clap!” This crowd even made the wave look cool. Then, right after Hungary won with a goal by sounding the horn, I couldn’t hear my own thoughts over the noise of the fans.”
“This sport is the life lesson that reminds me that the world is bigger than my borders. And that it’s okay to feel small while learning something new. Most importantly, handball has taught me that when a problem arises, you have to try to attack through the middle and always use the collar.” Concluded the columnist.
