From May 21 to 25, the third edition of the SCA Women’s Club Handball Championship was held in the city of San José and from May 28 to June 1, the fourth edition of the Men’s Championship was held in Taubaté, both tournaments in Brazil. These were two weeks full of exciting matches of the best handball in the continent, where there was also an outstanding participation of women in the coaching staffs.
Coaches, technical assistants, assistants, doctors, and kinesiologists were the different roles they played. This highlights the growing presence of women in different roles within handball, and highlights the progress towards greater gender equality in the sport.
They are the protagonists who made up the different coaching staffs at the SCA Club Handball Championship. Women’s:
Scuola Italiana was the only club whose coaching staff was made up entirely of women. Led by coach Daniela Mata Chechi who worked with Mariana Gómez and Candelaria Duarte.
Eliana Vanina Chiatti is the coach of the Jockey Club Córdoba team.
Djanga Bambambi Albino, was assigned as official A of the Goes club of Uruguay.
Delfina Minetti was the official B of the River Plate team along with physical trainer Priscila Álvarez.
At the Pinheiros club, Carla Rodrigues and Ana Clara Bezerra served as technical assistant and kinesiologist, respectively.
The competition’s bronze medalist, Club Ovalle de Chile, also has a woman on its coaching staff. Verónica Torres, who fulfilled the role of C official.
Agustina Cecilia Villalba de Sedalo was part of the coaching staff of the Argentine team in her role as C official.
They are the protagonists who made up the different coaching staffs in the SCA Men’s Club Handball Championship:
Club Universitario de Córdoba had Valeria Olmos as assistant coach.
The runners-up in the South Central region, Pinheiros, counted on Lais de Castro Coelho as the team’s kinesiologist.
In the Praia Clubes team, Lorena Teimeni Coelho was the team’s kinesiologist.
These professionals have demonstrated that high-level competition is not only limited to on-court performance, but is also reflected in the leadership and technical support they provide behind the scenes. The growing presence of women in these roles is an important step towards a more inclusive and equitable sport.
