The teams of Argentina, Brazil and Chile said goodbye this Friday to the 24th edition of the U20 Junior Women’s World Championship held in Skopje, North Macedonia. Three victories were achieved by the South American representatives who competed in the President’s Cup.
Brazil defeated Japan 38-32 in their last match of the tournament, scoring their highest number of goals in 14 years of competition, in 2010 they scored 47 goals against Australia. The team coached by Margarida Conte finished in 19th place, improving on last year’s 22nd place finish. Lorenna Loyane Da Souza Santos Silva was the top scorer for her team with 35 goals.
The Brazilians had a favorable balance in this competition, with four wins and three losses. In the group stage they lost 25-26 to Romania, 32-19 to the Netherlands and beat Mexico 41-16. In the President’s Cup and the definition of the world ranking, they defeated Chile 28-14, Tunisia 26-24 and lost 33-20 to Spain and 38-32 to Japan.
Argentina ended a new World Cup participation with a victory against a European team. They beat Serbia 27-26 in a difficult match, but were on top of the scoreboard from the beginning of the game. The Argentine team coached by Hernán Siso placed 21st, improving the record of Slovenia 2022 where they had finished 25th.
In addition, Argentina was in the top 3 in the “Team FairPlay” category, which is based on the number of sanctions received by each team. Sofia Gull was the Albiceleste’s top scorer with 42 goals. Argentina left the tournament with a positive balance of four wins and three losses . In their debut in Group C they lost to the European champion and one of the finalists of this tournament, Hungary 21-39, then lost to South Korea 31-33 and defeated Mexico 41-16. After finishing third in the group stage and playing in the President’s Cup, Argentina beat Chinese Taipei 27-25, lost to Japan 33-35 and beat Guinea 31-26 and Serbia 27-26.
Chile reached 29th place in the world ranking. He was unable to surpass the performance of Slovenia 2022 where he had finished 27th. However, they were able to win their last match against the United States by 33-26, a comfortable victory for the trans-Andean team that had just beaten Algeria by penalty kicks.
After competing in the group stage and the President’s Cup, Chile had two wins and five losses . In the first phase they lost 16-26 to Egypt, 47-11 to Switzerland and 28-46 to Tunisia. Then, in the definition of the ranking, they lost to Brazil 28-14 and lost 25:27 to Iran. The victories came against Algeria 34-33 and the United States 33-26.
