The IHF defined the three Pre-Olympic groups that will distribute the last six places for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, the matches will take place on March 20, 21 and 22 of next year.
Of the twelve teams that made it to the next event, six are already known: Japan, for being the host, the Netherlands, for the world title, and the champions of each continent: Brazil, South Korea, Angola and France. Of the remaining seven, six will come from the Pre-Olympic, the first two in each zone.
The Pre-Olympic participants depended on how the 2019 World Cup in Japan ended, in which Argentina finished in a historic sixteenth place. At the time of the draw, La Garra was waiting for the world runner-up to meet the last member of the group.
The groups were as follows:
Group 1: Sweden, Senegal, Argentina and Spain
Group 2: Serbia, China, Hungary and Russia
Group 3: Montenegro, Romania, Czech Republic and Norway
Of the four editions of the Pre-Olympic tournament, the Argentine team was not present in two: first to go to Beijing 2008, since it finished third in the Pan American Games in Rio de Janeiro. And then in the 2016 qualifier, but on that occasion it was because he got the ticket to his first Olympic Games since the Pan American champion, Brazil, was the host of the sport’s greatest event.
In their only participation in the competition, with a view to London 2012, the Albiceleste fell in their three matches against three Europeans, 31-15 in the debut against Spain, 31-21 against Croatia and 30-21 against the Netherlands.
